Principal Investigators
Cynthia Beall - cynthia.beall@case.edu
Dr. Beall is a physical anthropologist whose research focuses on human adaptation to high-altitude hypoxia, particularly the different patterns of adaptation exhibited by Andean, Tibetan and East African highlanders. Her current research deals with the genetics of adaptive traits and evidence for natural selection, with the role of nitric oxide in oxygen delivery at high altitude and with the human ecology of high-altitude Tibetan nomads.
Professor Beall is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Geoff Childs - gchilds@wustl.edu
Professor Childs’ research occupies the interdisciplinary space between anthropology and demography. He regularly visits the Tibetan enclaves in northern Gorkha District, Nepal, to study local history, family management strategies, demographic trends, and a host of other topics.
Sienna Craig - sienna.r.craig@dartmouth.edu
Craig is a scholar-teacher of cultural and medical anthropology as well as a creative writer. Her commitments to Nepali and Tibetan communities circle between Asia and North America, and extend across more than 25 years.
Anna Di Rienzo - dirienzo@bsd.uchicago.edu
Research in the Di Rienzo & Kupfer labs focuses on the genetic architecture of traits and diseases that vary across human populations and on understanding the role of natural selection in shaping this architecture. To this end, they use empirical population genetics and functional genomics approaches coupled with computational analyses of genome-scale data.
Buddha Basnyat - buddha.basnyat@ndm.ox.ac.uk
Basnyat’s main mission is to encourage young health care professionals in Nepal and beyond to become enthusiastically engaged in carrying out sound clinical trials in the region, writing these up and translating the findings, where applicable, to policy.
